TREATMENT OF STREET CLEANING RESIDUES
Throughout Germany, our group of companies handles the disposal of street cleaning residues. This involves making use of regional disposal options as well as our own recycling sites for processing the material. At our Hürth site near Cologne, we recycle residues from road cleaning and road shoulder material. The immediate collection area for the plant includes North Rhine-Westphalia as well as the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. We also operate in the north of the country, where we process road sweepings from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony.
The Hürth plant has the yearly capacity to process up to 80,000 tonnes and the Hamburg plant around 30,000 tonnes of street cleaning material, road shoulder planings and topsoil with the waste code numbers 20 03 03, 17 05 04 and 19 12 09. Various screening techniques are used in the processing, in the course of which three fractions are obtained.
While the fine fraction can be used in earthworks or in landfill construction, e.g. as recultivation soil or for profiling, the medium fraction is usually composted. Portions that are not suitable for composting are thermally treated – as is the coarse fraction.
We work with customers based across the country, in particular when it comes to disposing of road sweepings – whether they are municipalities, private or public disposal companies, road milling or construction firms. Cooperation takes place in the context of individual contracts as well as on the basis of framework agreements.
