Ecological added value of our recycling activities
With regard to sustainability, REMEX focuses on three topics: climate protection, landscape conservation and the optimisation of landfill quotas through the best possible recycling and recovery results. The environmental contribution that we achieve through our activities can be quantified, particularly with regard to the production of substitute construction materials, metal recovery and land remediation.
Climate protection
REMEX recovers a large number of metals from the processing of mineral waste – mainly copper, aluminium and iron scrap. These serve as secondary raw material sources for the metal processing industry. Compared to metal products made from primary raw materials, the use of recycled metals in manufacturing significantly reduces CO2 consumption. 235,000 tonnes of recycled metals from our processing plants for construction waste and incinerator bottom ash reduce emissions by around 640,000 tonnes a year.
CO2 savings compared to primary raw material sources
Landscape conservation
For the production of natural construction materials, valuable land is taken up by excavations in quarries and gravel pits. REMEX produces around 4 million tonnes of secondary aggregates and recycles an additional 1.9 million tonnes of soil material every year. The use of these materials in construction projects reduces the annual mining volume of raw building materials by 2.8 million m³. The lower landscape consumption has a positive effect on nature and the climate.

Landfill relief
Waste must be handled with the aim of maximising recovery. Waste should only be disposed of in landfills when recycling is not possible. Our activities in the treatment of construction and demolition waste, the processing of bottom ash from waste incinerators and soil decontamination enable more than 5.6 million tonnes of mineral material to be reused as building material every year. By avoiding disposal, we make a significant contribution to reducing the need for landfill.
