Dear Sir or Madam,
The latest developments of circularity worldwide are cause for concern. The current figures presented in the yearly Circularity
Gap Report are worrying. Only 7% of resources are recycled – humanity clearly consumes more than it reuses.
There are many factors preventing a much needed turn-around. Let’s leave aside regulatory factors, such as a lack of legally
binding recycling quotas or a much needed tax on raw materials. Overall, it is the human factor that is decisive for change:
Being convinced that the only way forward is re-use, openness to learn from others, and implementing recycled goods, need
to be the standard rather than the exception.
In an age that some are already calling „post-global“ it becomes even more important to network and to exchange best
practices internationally. We must stop using more than the earth can provide. With this in mind, we will continue to share our
knowledge regarding the recycling of minerals, the biggest waste stream worldwide.

Swiss develop reusable drum for asbestos disposal
In Switzerland, only a few landfills still accept untreated
asbestos waste. Currently, a mandatory treatment of the
hazardous material is being discussed. Our Swiss company
REMEX Recycling AG, based in Basel, has led the way
since 2019, when it pioneered the binding of asbestos in
concrete at its own plant. Now, they have developed the
disposal concept further, replacing big bags that are
currently used for disposal with a sustainable reusable

Certified incinerator bottom ash for OptiBlend®
A sustainable alternative to conventional foundation materials called OptiBlend® has recently been introduced in the
Netherlands. This is a cementitious material produced using processed incineration bottom ash (IBA) from Energy-from-
Waste plants. The material is suitable for projects in the construction and infrastructure sectors, increasing the speed of
construction by solidifying and stabilising the underground faster than conventional earthwork methods. Dependent on the
location of the project, the mix is delivered just-in-time or produced on site with mobile equipment. OptiBlend® is the result of
cooperation between the construction company > Van de Beeten and the Dutch manufacturer > HEROS Sluiskil who
supplies the certified IBA of the granova® brand. The new material is produced as a dry mix. > Learn more

CLOSING THE CIRCULARITY GAP
Published for the sixth time in a row during The World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, the Circularity Gap
Report belongs to the key publication providing leaders and businesses with the insights, data, knowledge and networks to
accelerate change.
However, the message of the latest report is alarming as the world is looking at a a decreasing – instead of a growing –
circularity rate. The current rate amounts to only 7,2 %, representing 7.1 billion t of resources such as non-metallic
minerals, metal ores, fossil fuels, biomass. In 2018, when the first report was launched, the rate had in fact stood at 9,1 %. Overall, resources consumed worldwide remained the same as in the previous years at around 100 billion t. Half of this
volume is made up of minerals, mainly needed by a booming construction industry to provide housing and infrastructure for
the rising population in many parts of the world.

The circularity gap initiative presents 21 solutions to reduce
resource consumption. Regarding minerals, the list included
resource efficient housing and construction, reduction of
floor space, natural housing solutions, increasing durability
and using circular construction materials. The use of
secondary construction materials alone has the potential to
reduce mineral extraction by 3.5 billion t, increasing
the circularity rate by 3.5 %. This would at the same time
result in an emission saving of 1.1 Gt.

Third location in France supports international growth
Our subsidiary REMEX RESOURCES MINÉRALES SAS currently operates two sites in France, located in Straßbourg and
Muttersholtz, both in the Département Bas-Rhin. The opening of a third French site is now in preparation. Covering an area
of around 8,800 m² on Île Napoléon, the new site in Mulhouse is perfectly located for shipping minerals nationally and
internationally via the Rhine. The site has a 100-meter steep quay and is only a few kilometers from the French A 35/A 36
interchange and the German A 5 freeway. In addition to handling non-hazardous and hazardous waste, the site will offer the
possibility of simple pre-treatment steps such as screening, crushing, conditioning and iron separation.

Office, > Xindi Wang has now officially taken over his role as Chief Representative of REMEX in China. Mr. Wang, who is a
material science expert with a Maters’s degree from the German RWTH Aachen university, previously spent significant time
with REMEX in Germany, getting insights into our activities and competences at more than 60 national and international
