We are proud to report on the latest acknowledgement of our contribution to resource and climate protection: In cooperation with the renowned consultancy Munich Strategy, the German magazine WirtschaftsWoche – the equivalent to the international magazine The Economist – has just elected REMEX among the > most sustainable medium-sized companies in Germany. In the assessment of 4,000 companies covering all ESG criteria, REMEX convinced the jury with a sustainability score of 258 points, resulting in a total ranking in the TOP 25.

Our research initiatives and investment in integrated metal recycling are examples of our efforts to make the ideal of a Zero Waste economy a reality. Read more about these as well as other leading projects in this edition of our international newsletter.

Dolphin Metal Separation B.V. now part of REMEX Group

In July 2022, the Dutch REMEX subsidiary > HEROS Sluiskil B.V. took over Dolphin Metal Separation B.V. The core business activity of Dolphin is the treatment of coarse non-ferrous metal concentrates from incinerator bottom ash processing using advanced sink float techniques.

Dolphin is situated on a 20,000 m² area in Harderwijk, 65 km east of Amsterdam. As part of the metal treatment process, the raw mix is cleansed of mineral impurities and separated into light and heavy metals. The incoming material stems mainly from European waste processing plants; the purified metal is sold on the international market.

The new owner HEROS operates one of the largest incinerator bottom ash processing plants in Europe, producing secondary aggregates for the construction sector and recovering metals during the process. The iron scrap is then sold to steel manufacturers. Since 2017, the fine non-ferrous metals are treated inhouse in the refinery plant in Sluiskil and the coarse fraction was sold to sink float companies for further treatment.

According to Paul Dijkman, HEROS board member and Managing Director of Dolphin, the acquisition now closes the loop. “Combining the expertise of Dolphin and HEROS, we can now make use of a completely integrated value chain for all metal fractions, covering all steps from recovery and cleaning up to the direct delivery to smelting companies.”

Joint Venture REKS

REMEX GmbH has transferred its international underground stowage activities to a newly formed company, REKS GmbH & Co. KG. Since December 2021, K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH and REMEX GmbH hold equal shares and equal rights in the new joint venture.

As part of the joint venture, REMEX outsourced its 100 % German subsidiary AUREC, which processes mineral waste for backfilling at the K+S plant in Bernburg (GER), to REKS. Furthermore, the specialist department for inorganic hazardous waste has been integrated into REKS. The joint venture is headquartered in Düsseldorf and has an additional operating site in Kassel.

The aim of REKS is to internationally market waste for underground recovery or disposal and for coverage of potash tailing piles. Additionally the company will manage material flows from the German REKAL plant in Sigmundshall. This is combined with efficient access to the facilities of K+S, including two underground landfills and five underground stowage facilities in Saxony-Anhalt, Hessen, Thuringia and Lower Saxony.

The cooperation between K+S and REMEX opens up extensive opportunities for REKS for the acquisition of materials nationally and internationally that are needed to cover tailing piles at German potash sites. In order to avoid tailing pile water caused by precipitation, in the future the tailing piles shall be completely covered in a suitable manner by applying newly developed sustainable processes.

REMEX wins Ivry sur Seine in France

As of 2023, REMEX will be responsible for the management of an annual 35,000 tonnes of raw bottom ash from the Energyfrom-Waste (EfW) plant Ivry sur Seine in France. Our group of companies has won the public tender by > SYCTOM, the Metropolitan Agency for Household Waste from the Île de France region.

The ash will be transported directly by ship from the Paris EfW plant to the REMEX subsidiary HEROS Sluiskil B.V. in the Netherlands. There, it will be processed under the Dutch Green Deal which enforces the highest possible recycling rates.

Already two years ago, REMEX won the contract for the bottom ash management for Issy les Moulineaux (see also newsletter edition > 03/2020). The transport solution and the technical advantages of HEROS now convinced once more. The new contract for Ivry sur Seine will run for four years.

Singapore: famous coastal road with IBA sections opened

Congratulations to our teams in Singapore and in the Netherlands! Both were involved in realising the Tanah Merah Coast Road project as part of the NEWSand initiative in Singapore. The National Environment Agency (NEA) reported on social media in April, that the road is now fully opened to traffic.

Around 3,000 tonnes of sustainable aggregates produced from incinerator bottom ash were used in the pilot project, demonstrating that the treated residues from the Waste-to-Energy plants in Singapore could turn into a real alternative to natural materials. It is part of the national efforts to work towards Zero Waste, making IBA aggregates fully usable in road construction. For details on our contribution to the project, read > our article.


The province of Zeeland has awarded a grant for a research project focussing on the extraction of fine metal particles from waste incineration slag. The companies HEROS, SieTec and Stage Gate 11 want to jointly demonstrate that the Delta R technology can automatically recognise fine metal particles in the waste stream and separate them into different types of metal. They are also investigating how the metals can be sorted after identification and how processing can be further optimised.

In a first step, the project focuses on testing the technology in offline analysis for HEROS. Among other things, the degree of identification, sorting and economic feasibility will be investigated. This will serve as a proof of concept and a plan for possible future action to bring the province of Zeeland closer to a 100 % circular economy. The project is supported by Rotterdam University.
