REMEX in Singapore: Recycling metals and minerals from bottom ash from waste incineration plants

REMEX flagship project in Asia

In Singapore, REMEX GmbH operates one of the most modern recycling facilities for incinerator bottom ash (IBA) processing and metal recovery from IBA. The Environment and Water Resources Minister of the Republic of Singapore officially opened the facility in December 2015. With a record construction time of only eight months, the plant, which features innovative processes and techniques, has become a flagship project in Asia.

European experience successfully implemented

REMEX founded REMEX Minerals Singapore Pte. Ltd. in 2014 to enable the construction and operation of the facility. With this subsidiary in Southeast Asia, new territory was entered from a continental perspective.. Our company acts on behalf of the National Environment Agency (NEA) and transfers the experience from similar REMEX plants in the Netherlands and Germany to the Asian market.

The facility was built in Singapore's Tuas industrial zone. Around 600,000 tonnes of ash are processed and recycled there every year. More than 90 percent of the ferrous metals contained and more than three quarters of the valuable non-ferrous metals such as aluminium or copper are recycled. A proud quota, which is especially possible due to sophisticated magnetic and screening technology. The new REMEX processing facility clearly advances recycling, which is eminently important for Singapore, and the goal of a "Zero Waste Economy".

REMEX creates the basis for further international growth with this highly-efficient recycling facility. At the same time, as a company, we stand by those who are facing the global challenge of becoming a waste-free nation.

Metal treatment plant Singapore

Since 2021, REMEX operates its own metal processing plant in Singapore. The facility has a capacity of 200 tons per day and is used to dry and purify iron scrap. It is located in a hall on a 4,000 m² site directly adjacent to the area of the current ash processing plant. The cleaning process removes most of the mineral deposits, which increases the quality of the recycled metals considerably – with corresponding added value for subsequent reuse.

The purified ferrous metals are transferred to REMEX Metal Processing Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia, a 50% shareholding of the REMEX subsidiary in Singapore. After further classification, the metals are marketed to international customers from the steel processing industry.
